Notetaking for Research

Where can I start?

Where else could I start?

You are going to need a Xerox of any page

which you quote from.

You are required to incorporate at least four quotes in your research paper-- and one the quotes has to be more than four lines across when you type it in your paper-- referred to as your "long quote."

Search for at least two (2) separate quotations  from

the script of the movie.  Make a Zerox or print a copy of the page(s) where you found the quote.

Highlight script quote 1 in blue and script quote 2 in pink.

Highlight your quotation from the Elements of Literature textbook in yellow

Highlight your required other academic source or site in

green.

Keep careful records of the sources of the quotes you plan to use, along with other

facts or details from the movie you plan to use to prove your points.  Review the class

handout on incorporating quotes in order to make them “blended” rather than

“stand alone.”

Note:   Carefully note the http:  address that you find the quotes on, the date

you looked up the quotes,  the names of the writer and director, and the name

and page and scene  (if possible ) of the  particular scene in which  the quotes

are found. Make a print of that page only.

You will also need to

collect all the information you will need to

cite the source correctly on your Works Cited

page. (The "collect all the information" link above tells how

to list a source in your Works Cited, as well

as explaining how to handle a source

with no author's name.)

It is easiest to collect the information when you

first access the site.  I recommend that you read over the

examples on this page as well as the examples

and resources listed at the

Works Cited

(I mean Torture page (uh.. that is Teaching..).

Citing Sources

"You cite sources for two reasons. One is to show readers where you obtained your material. The other is to offer readers a list of references should they want to read more about the subject."

The sentence above is a direct quote from a book on writing term papers. As it is quoted directly, it is necessary to acknowledge the source used. In this case it is: William C. Paxson, The Mentor Guide to Writing Term Papers and Reports (New York, N.Y. : New American Library, 1988), p. 165.

There are two main ways to cite information in a paper, Footnotes or Endnotes and Parenthetical References. Your teacher will tell you which method to use. The APA Style, MLA Style and Turabian Style are different formats used in writing a paper. Your teacher will tell you which to use. Whatever method and style you use, you are accomplishing the important task of acknowledging and documenting the sources of your information. You cite your source:

bulletto give the origin of facts or opinions
bulletwhen using a direct quote
bulletwhen paraphrasing someone else's work
bulletwhen stating a fact that is not commonly known
bulletwhen stating controversial facts or opinions

"The standard format for an online citation is:
Author's name (last name first). Document title.
Date of web publication. Date of access. <URL>.

Remember to indent citations that exceed one line. "

Example:

Phillips, Brian. SparkNote on Shakespeare's Hamlet. September
    2001. <http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/hamlet>.
